Inspiration for a design project comes to us from a multitude of different sources—a colorful piece of artwork, a thoughtfully curated collection, or a beautiful locale just to name a few. When it comes to unique ideas for lighting, however, there’s no need to look further than the history of the Lowcountry and the stylish homes of the historic South. From elegantly-detailed ironwork to clean and timeless glass globes, fixtures were chosen both for function and for their dramatic impact upon a room.
As with trends today, the lighting fixtures of these homes evolved over a period of time. According to Old House Online, during the 1860-1865 era homeowners were influenced by European tastes. Rich brass castings and cut glass shades comprised the look of the day. Moving into the Renaissance Revival period just a few years later, fixtures made of brass and bronze became even more eclectic and elaborate. Simpler designs began to emerge after the Civil War.
Taking cues from the past, the Southern Grace Interiors team creates contemporary looks that will remain relevant for years to come. Thanks to the multitude of resources available today, we are able to provide our clients with a modern interpretation of these classic designs. Below, we’ve shared inspiring images of historic homes alongside modern lighting fixtures that capture the essence of classic southern style!
